Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
