Prime TV Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Movies This Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique tackles the demanding standards for female beauty as well as the dreaded aspects of ageing. Demi Moore offers a brilliant acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to starring in a workout series on TV. Forced aside by her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and gruesome process known as the Substance. This generates a youthful duplicate named Sue, culminating in an increasingly parasitic dynamic between the two. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery includes the talented actress as Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a hiatus from writing about international wars to board an opulent ship with a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her spouse, as well as other extremely wealthy individuals. But after a mysterious woman goes overboard during the evening and the entire crew denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Out now, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries through this nifty supernatural story captured wholly through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, with a twist that may be unexpected. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

The iconic actor fully commits to his unique fame via this self-referential adventure. He plays a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a lucrative offer to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unconventional method is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has left the children anxious. When Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates the worst. Yet the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister could save him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet Chastain manages to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4

Black Bag

The current week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks used by Fassbender's British agent. His assignment is with uncovering a double agent inside the organization from five suspects – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful psychological game of fact versus fiction unfolds. The supporting cast join in the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
